One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Bangkok is also the most fabulous shopping destination in Asia. In fact, shopping in Bangkok is truly fun as well as a great experience, with an array of shopping locations, ranging from glitzy modern shopping malls to traditional bustling street markets selling antiquities and designer and traditional jewelry.

In short, Bangkok is a mecca for shopping enthusiasts, and everything including electronic items, computer software and hardware, art and craft items, Chinese specialties, textiles, jewelry, and much more can be shopped here.

Perhaps most popular among the shopping highlights in Bangkok is the Siam Square, which is strategically positioned at Central Station on the BTS Sky Train route. This area is dotted with hundreds of high-end shopping malls, among which one of the most sought after is Siam Center and Siam Discovery Center, within which one can find a number of shops selling branded items.

There is also an elegant cinema complex on the top floor of Siam Discovery Center, with comfortable seats. This is a great place to relax after a day of tired shopping. Located just ten minutes walk from the Siam Square is another much famed shopping spot in Bangkok, namely, Mahboonkrong Shopping Center, dotted with a large number of shops selling quality clothing and electronic items at knock-down prices.

One can also find a couple of shopping malls and department stores, close to the Chit Lom BTS Sky Train station. Among which, perhaps the most significant is the eight-storied World Trade Center, attached with a number of duty free shops. Found on the top floor of the World Trade Center is an ice skating rink. The Central Group’s flagship store, Central Chit Lom Department Store, is also located here. Such shopping centers as Gaysorn Plaza, Maneya Centre, Sogo, and Narayana Phand, a great spot to shop handicraft items, are also situated in this area.

For those who want to shop computer-related items and peripherals at cheap prices, a great way would be to head to Pantip Plaza on the Phetburi Road. This is a paradise for shopping computer items. Every floor within the plaza has a number of shops selling both original and pirated software and hardware items. One could buy copy of VCD movies for a price as low as 100 baht.

A good number of small as well as large shopping malls can also be found along the Ploenchit Road and Sukhumvit Road, such as, Robinson, Ploenchit Plaza, Times Square, Emporium, and Landmark.

Popular shopping areas in Bangkok also include Silom Road, located to the south of the Siam Square. Just few among the shopping malls in this area are Silom Center, Central department stores, Silom Plaza, Thaniya Plaza, Silom Village, and Holiday Inn Crown Plaza.

Shopping at Bangkok would not be complete without taking a tour to Chatuchak market, which becomes alive in the city every weekend. The Best Poker Players Of All Time

The best of anything is a matter of opinion and perspective, and this is absolutely true when trying to decide who are the best poker players. This also has to be broken into tournament play, cash game play, and the type of poker game. Some poker players are great in certain games like Holdem and not so great in other games. According to what is said about Chip Reese, the great poker player, many professionals think he would be the choice, even though his WSOP wins are not as prolific as Brunson, Chan, and Hellmuth. However, Reese won three WSOP tournaments before his death in 2007. In 2006, Reese won the prestigious $50,000 Buy-in Horse Tournament at the WSOP. The Horse tournament is difficult to win, as it combines several poker games in one tournament. These are Holdem, Omaha, Razz, Seven-card Stud, and Seven-card Stud Hi Low. Reese’s long time friend, Doyle Brunson, considered him one of the best poker players he ever played against. That is high praise from a player many considered the Godfather of Poker. Brunson, Hellmuth, and Johnny Chan are considered the best when it comes to playing Holdem. Hellmuth has the most wins at the WSOP at this time with eleven wins all in Holdem.

The Poker Kid, Daniel Negreanu, after a failed try at Las Vegas poker when he was 21, has come on very strong in his play in TV tournaments like the WPT and other tournaments that were TV oriented. Negreanu is also considered a very tough cash game player, unlike Hellmuth who is considered an excellent Holdem tournament player, but an average cash game player. The top cash game players are supposedly happy to see him show up for the big cash games in Vegas.

T J Cloutier, another long time opponent and friend of Doyle Brunson, has long been considered one of the best players in the poker world. His consistency is amazing in showing up at final tables. His cash game prowess has always stood him in good stead. Like Brunson, he makes few mistakes, and players who win against him are usually just a shade luckier than he was in the tournament.

One of the long time faces at final tables is the player, Dan Harrington. He made the final table two years in a row against huge fields in the WSOP. That is a testament to his skill at playing tournament poker. In one website vote, he was voted the best player of the professionals.

Some of the recent winners of the WSOP main event have become money leaders, or very high on the list of earnings due to the huge 1st place prize money. However, few if any are considered the best poker player in the world at this time. It will take several years to see if these winners were a one trick player or have the real skill to get to final tables again.

The public has little knowledge of another group of players that are extremely good players. These are the players that take a seat in some of the biggest cash games in the world. Las Vegas has long been the place to play if a player wanted to play in a poker game which had the highest stakes Almost every day, you can see some of the best cash game players play in places like the Rio, the Bellagio, or the Venetian casino. These games are not only for solid players, but also for players with ample resources to play in a game where a bad day could be well over a $100,000 loss. This play not only takes money to play, but the courage to take that level of risk on the turn of a card. These players have to live with the risk that a better hand can crack a solid hand. Many of these player-participants are only known to the cash players and are rarely seen on TV. The only place some of them have been seen is playing in the High Stakes Poker program that is now on TV. But when you watch their play, you can easily see that they do not play bad hands. It is also obvious that they are not prone to making playing mistakes or bad calls. Some of these players cannot afford to play in tournaments, as they would lose too much time and would make less money than they do in cash games. The only time you will see them is in a game like High Stakes Poker, or in a big cash game in a casino. Yet, several of them could be rated in the running for best poker player. Their play warrants it as well as their annual winnings.

Conclusions

The best poker players of all time come down to personal choice and perception. Most of the well-known names in the current poker scene have shown they know how to play very well. Current old timers remember some of the old time players as the best they ever played against. The problem is most people never saw them play. Stu Unger was a kid when he first won the WSOP two years in a row. His play was the best, say the players who tried to beat him. Unfortunately for him, he was a drug addict and addicted to other forms of gambling like sports betting and horses. He disappeared from play after his second win, and when he came back for a third try, he won again. Three tries in the WSOP and three wins. That is an amazing record. The question that still goes unanswered is how good would he have been if he had taken care of himself and lived a less wild life. His talent was at a level that most players only dream about. His name has to be considered when discussing the best poker players. His mental skills were genius level as was his card playing skill. His weakness was his drug addiction. Make your own choice as to the best poker player. Your pick is as good as most.

Misbelieves and realities about one of the hottest stag party location in Central Europe, Budapest

August 31, 2009 by bkkpkerplayer

Since Hungary joined the EU in 2004 the entry has opened up to low cost airlines, including the ones from the UK that carry most of the stag groups to Budapest. The number of groups choosing Budapest for their stag party location has rapidly increased and is still growing. Traveling abroad is generally quite stressful for most people. So if you are traveling for a stag weekend with another 10-15 hard-to-control mates of yours who are dead hungry for fun, and your stag party destination is Budapest – that is in Eastern Europe -, you might consider to try to find as much information on your destination as possible for the sake of avoiding problems and having a fantastic time.

You might have heard many rumours about Budapest. Some people who have never been here will tell you horror stories, some the opposite. We all know how important the word of mouth is even though it might not entirely reflect the reality. Some people will be disappointed with Budapest, however, the most will be delighted.

Many people will tell you that Budapest is just like Prague being crowded and overwhelmed by British stag groups. In reality Budapest is much larger and can easily absorb three or four times more visitors than Prague. What is more, while Prague has a tiny, compact central area, Budapest has a sprawling city center spread over more than 25 square miles.

Some people will question public safety in Budapest and tell you horror stories about Eastern European cities including Hungary’s capital. As a matter of fact Budapest is generally a safe and relaxed place. It is like a western European city; forget the horror stories you have heard. Violent crime is rare and generally crime in Budapest is low by Western European standards. You are unlikely to have any problems during your stay if you follow the basic rules you wouldn’t forget in other major cities. Racism or xenophobia is not too very common an occurrence here either. Petty crime however is common, but is mainly limited to pickpockets and petty theft. According to the British embassy’s information: “The main type of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Hungary in 2006 was petty crime, often including the loss of money and/or passports.”

Also pub fights are very rare in Budapest! It is highly unlikely you will see any and hardly ever do problems generate between the stag groups and locals.

You might get informed that everything is very cheap in Budapest. Don’t let yourself be fooled; it is not 100% true! Yes, generally we can say that compared to the prices in the UK the prices in Budapest are lower, and that the “ingredients” of a good stag party – i.e. beer (£1.50/ per pint) and food (£10 for 2-3 course), tobacco (£1.5 per pack) – are much cheaper. However, you might enter a club or restaurant where these prices are not applicable and you are required to pay similar amounts of money you would pay in the UK. Also spirits, long drinks and cocktails have similar prices like they have in the UK, but in Hungary in case of spirits the measurement is bigger. In spite of this bigger measurement many stag groups are surprised and disappointed with the price.

Perhaps people will warn you about the taxis and you might hear some terrific stag weekend stories to confirm that taxis are dangerous in Budapest. They will tell you that a 5-minute drive cost £40 for them and the driver even threatened them when they didn’t want to pay. Unfortunately, some of these stories are true. However, this is not typical of Budapest and conflict is easy to avoid. Taxis don’t cost that much (around £5 in the inner city) if you take our advice. The general rule for your stag weekend is that it is better to phone for a taxi from one of the reputable local companies and make sure the taximeter is on or haggle the price with the driver before starting the ride.

You might have heard Budapest dubbed the Bangkok if Eastern Europe or The capital of the European porn industry. So, what does that mean? Don’t get the wrong idea; some of the stag groups were expecting half naked girls dancing on the streets of the red light district, whereas Budapest does not even have a designated red light district. It is nevertheless true that many adult movies were shot in Budapest and many famous porn stars are from here. Not having a red light district does not mean a shortage of strip clubs! A real stag party would not even be that without a visit to one of the lush gentlemen’s clubs; you would not want to miss out on that!

For sure, you will be warned about striptease bars in Budapest. And it is not without any reason. If you are not careful enough it can be an extremely expensive stag weekend, you can be charged exorbitant prices in certain strip bars. Most of the erotic bars in Budapest are tourist traps but – and it is very important- not all of them! A cautiously chosen striptease bar guaranties an excellent time out for all participants. To give you some idea on the prices in a non tourist trap strip club, the easiest is to say that the prices of drinks are very similar to those in the UK. If you choose the right club you might even get a 2 for 1 option on your first drink. Try to avoid buying a drink for the girls! If you want to have a lap dance it costs almost the same as the drink itself.

To ensure a fantastic stag weekend in Budapest we strongly recommend using a local stag organizer company. By accepting our advice, we like to think that you are assured to belong to the long list of customers who have great memories of Hungary.

Poker room reviews: Caesars Palace, Las Vegas

The Caesar’s Palace poker room in Las Vegas is one of the finest facilities you’ll find anywhere with a knowledgeable, friendly staff and comfortable surroundings bordering on luxurious. However, finding it can be a challenge. The entrance is located between the Pure nightclub and the sports book. Yes, there is a huge “Poker” sign directing players to the entrance, but players have to be looking for the poker room to find their way in here. Players must enter the Caesars Palace poker room through a large door that leads them down a diagonal hallway and then eventually into an enormous cavern of poker action.

Admittedly, a poker cavern is really cool and in that way it succeeds. There is certainly little distraction from the nearby casino in this poker room. However, for serious poker players hoping to make money during their poker time there is one serious drawback. Its location means you get few drunken tourists stumbling into the Caesars Palace poker room to play “No Limit Hold’em just like on television.” In other words, the sights, sounds, and excitement of live poker can’t suck in bad players.

Still, while the other poker players are rarely soft marks for your dazzling poker play, the room’s features are still a huge draw. There are flat screen televisions all over the place, new poker tables with built in auto shufflers, and comfortable poker chairs. Best of all and unlike most other locations in Sin City, there is plenty of space between all of the poker tables, which means that players will never feel cramped here.

There are other great features around the poker room that give it a classy vibe too. You’ll find decorative chandeliers providing excellent light, comfortable chairs and sofas for waiting players, and lots of sports themed art gallery style prints hanging on the walls.

The Caesars Palace poker room is also enormous; it’s easily among the largest poker rooms in Las Vegas. It even has a totally separate section for its daily poker tournaments. And its poker tournaments are where the Caesars Palace poker room really excels. The tournaments are among the best in Las Vegas in terms of value for the money.

Caesar’s is also popular with the rich and famous crowd and the poker room is also readily visited by a wealth of famous people. At a frecent visit I saw baseball great Orel Herschiser playing in a tournament – good player, too!

So for a classy poker experience, Caesar’s Palace offers one of the best poker rooms you can experience. Now, sit down, shuffle up, and deal!

Travel destinations in Thailand – Part 7

Chumphon lies on the east coast of Thailand. It is about 5 hours drive from Bangkok and a similar distance from Phuket. It therefore makes a convenient stopping off point for anyone driving between Bangkok and Phuket which is how we came upon it. Another reason to make it the stopover of choice is the unspoilt beach of Thung Wua Laen. Although there are some small hotels and increasing sign of tourist activity, this beach remains relatively undiscovered probably because it is not so easy to reach from Bangkok as Hua Hin and and Pattaya further north. It also faces competition from Koh Samui which is a few hours ferry from Surat Thani which is the nearest airport.

The beach is beautiful with fine, white sand that squeaks when you walk on it and it gently shelves out into the clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand indicating that it is safe for swimming. A road runs alongside the beach with some small hotels on one side and, in some parts, one or two beach bars and restaurants which all offer incredibly good value especially when compared to more popular resorts. A line of coconut palm and fir trees, together with some undergrowth sprouting wild flowers, separates the road from the pristine beach.

Thung Wua Laen beach is obviously very popular with the local population from nearby Chumpon and especially for recreational activities especially on the Thai’s traditional day off Sunday. They can be seen strolling and picknicking on the beach as well as in the small restaurants. The more commercial activity of fishing, presumably to provide sea fodder for the restaurants as well as the local populace, is also in evidence. There are several fishing boats moored in the bay and fishing nets can be seen hanging in the sun to dry.

The odd intrepid backpacker as well as a few knowing tourists have discovered this beach but it is far from being developed. There is no night life and only a few simple hotels, bars and restaurants but, on the other hand, if you are only after a quiet, relaxing, beautiful, unspoilt beach for a couple of days representing a true Thailand, then look no further. This is one of Thailand’s hidden gems.

Online Texas Holdem Poker Strategy: Maintain Focus At The Poker Table

August 30, 2009 by bkkpkerplayer

There’s no doubt about it, some people are just better at poker than others. They appear to win consistently and seemingly at will. So this leaves many with a few questions which linger on the mind.

Could it be that poker is only a game of chance with no other forces to play upon besides the fickle Lady Luck?

What makes a good poker player a great poker player?

Is there a way in which I can be a more successful poker player?

If these questions have been yours at one time or another, then you’re certainly not alone. Millions of average poker players would like to enhance their gaming skill, and there are tons of products out there selling every day which promise to make you a better poker player. Poker players and wannabe poker gurus spend hard earned cash every day to learn the one secret which will transform them into poker pros in twenty four hours or less.

Let’s face it, if skill came in a can, and Lady Luck in a bottle, we’d all be poker pros. Sadly, improving your poker game just isn’t as easy as opening a can or a bottle, but don’t lose hope, there is something you can do.

The main problem which plagues poker players is the lack of focus. Focus is the key which can turn mediocre poker players into successful poker players. When a player loses focus, they will most certainly lose the game to someone who has maintained theirs.

The main causes of loss of focus at the poker table are:

Focusing on talk rather than the poker game: Talking during play is without a doubt the toughest habit to kick, and is the biggest consumer of our poker time attention. Poker time chat is something that’s expected, especially among friends, so it’s tough to quit without appearing rude. Tone it down over time, and you’ll see your poker winning streak improve.

Focusing on food rather than the poker game: Food is essential to all human beings, that’s a fact we’re all familiar with. However, food shouldn’t be your focus while playing poker. Instead of munching during the actual game, grab something to eat before play begins, and during breaks in play. Focus off of food leaves more focus for poker.

Focusing on alcohol rather than on the poker game: Now here’s where I’ll lose some of you for sure. If you really want to improve your poker game, leave the drinking of alcoholic beverages for post game chatter. A clear mind places smarter bets, and also puts you at an advantage over your inebriated poker pals.

Focusing on a personal issue rather than on the poker game: We all have issues at one time or another in life. Bringing them to the poker table isn’t helping anyone but your opponents. If you have something pressing on your mind and can’t set it aside, then leave poker for another time. This may sound a little harsh, but it’s the truth.

Focusing on a local distraction: This could be anything from your friend’s bad toupee, the barking of a distant dog or the tv upstairs. Filter out the ambient non poker essentials. Forget the toupee, the dog and the tv. It’s poker time pal, let’s get down to it!

Focus in itself is a skill. Any skill can be developed over time if diligently practiced. The five focus stealers we discussed will kill your poker game if you let them. By developing a razor sharp focus, you can cut them off before they become a persistent problem.

Becoming a poker pro – Part 1

At no point should you ever make a conscious decision to become a poker pro. As soon as you’ve done that, you’ve set yourself up for a fall. Instead it is important to focus on being profitable in poker. When you find yourself at a point that you look at your finances and say, “it doesn’t make sense that I should be working any more – I should really be putting that time into cards,” then you may be getting ready to ramp up into the pro life. Nonetheless, building the skills to succeed in high stakes poker takes a huge amount of time and effort. If you’re smart enough to be a successful poker pro, you could become a lawyer with the same expenditure of work.

I cannot stress enough that you play within your means, but it’s ok to devote income to your bankroll if you don’t have the capital to start out. When I started to get serious about poker, my math degree at Waterloo had left me in a heap of debt. Nonetheless, I was writing compilers for a living at the time and my income was sufficient to cover my lifestyle and start fleshing out a bankroll. At the time, the smallest game around was a 5-10 at the local charity casino and online poker was in its infancy and seen as something insecure and unreliable. It took two thousand hours of play at 5/10 in my spare time for me to have enough data to support that I was a strong winning player. I’d wake up at 2:00 am and head to the cardroom to play against anybody who was stuck and steaming from the night before and a lot of the old retired players with nothing to do started rolling in by 6. At 8:00 I’d jump into my car, throw on a clean shirt on the highway, and drive to my day job.

After moving up to 10/20, I spent another 2000 hours before 20/40 and beyond. During that time I also started playing microlimits online. I felt completely comfortable putting small amounts of money into an online roll and playing for 15 minutes before bed just. Soon that roll started to grow and I started moving up my limits online. Over the course of several years I started going to the casino less and less and playing online more and more until I was virtually exclusively an online player. Then around the time that Moneymaker won the world series, poker was at an amazing boom and I quit my job to become an online poker pro. I decided to spend a month driving across America with poker stops in Tunica, Vegas, LA, and the Bay Area. I fell in love with the Commerce Casino. I found myself a road pro living in Bellagio and Commerce.

Becoming a poker pro

Anyone can be a professional poker player. With cunning, patience, and a little luck, playing poker can pay out as much cash as your part time job. The only downside is someone must lose money for you to win money. A professional poker player understands this, and only stakes cash he is willing to lose. It is when your cash is on the table, the excitement begins!

Becoming a professional begins and ends with knowing your game. Try this quiz: What is a royal flush? What is a straight flush? What is four of a kind? What is a full house? What is a flush? What is straight? What is three of a kind? What is a 2 pair? what is a pair? What is a high card? What is a kicker? The first mark of competency in a poker player is being able to quickly call from memory the value of these hands in ascending and descending order.

As you may have noticed, a kicker is not a hand. It is included because every professional poker player knows that the kicker is often the deciding factor in who gets the pot. Many great players have gone all in with matching hands, only to lose the pot to the opponent’s superior kicker card. Queen pair with a king kicker beats a Queen pair with a jack kicker. Are you willing to bet on your kicker when your opponent has the same two pair or straight as you?

There are many variations of the game of poker and many strategies entailed in winning the pot. Poker is a thinking game. Are these cards suited? Could they form a reliable straight? Are these cards high cards or low cards? Does the draw help this hand? If somebody places a bet, is it possible he has a better hand than this? Is this hand worth the risk? In some games, such as Texas hold-em, players will wait for hours for a good starting hand. The game of poker is categorized as gambling. Waiting for the best starting hand often bends luck in your favour.

Professional poker players know when to leave the table. There is no good reason not to rest. Fatigue is the deciding factor in many games. A player plagued with fatigue will make mistakes. Mistakes are costly. Making many mistakes will cost the player the game. This player will go home both tired and broke. It is better to leave when you are alert, knowing you won or lost in good mind than to regret playing into the night. This applies both to tournaments and to open games.

The game of poker is a game. It is a hobby, much like going to a movie, a rock show, or a carnival. You pay for the fun. Much like paying for a rock show or a movie or a game at the bowling lanes, you stake the worth of your game. Being a professional means losing professionally. However, winning makes you a professional as well!

The excitement of winning releases an adrenaline rush, much like jogging, exciting movies, and other addictive activities that many people enjoy on a regular basis. The release of endorphins in your brain is what makes fun activities fun. In comparison to most activities, poker can be costly. For some people, the game of poker is an obsession. For some people, the game of poker is an addiction. A professional poker player knows his limit, and will not go beyond this limit.

NOTE: Many casino’s offer players the ability to ban themselves from a casino if they feel they have gone over the proverbial edge. These casino’s will do everything in their power to prevent such players from playing in their casino’s for an agreed upon time, spanning anywhere from 6 months to two years. There are also people available to offer understanding whom such players can contact should such players feel the need to talk about gambling. Visit your local casino or check your phone book for more information.
