Video poker guru

So I’m in the casino (as if I should be somewhere else) when the young fellah calls me up on the mobile to ask for words of wisdom on online video poker. I’m not exactly at my best, nursing a screwdriver. Time was, when I was a little hung over, I would just chug coffee, black and sweet as my lover’s kiss. But, now I’m a cranky baby boomer, the caffeine winds me up too much – don’t need that kind of a buzz no more, don’t find too many women offering free kisses neither, more’s the pity. So I turns to Jack here behind the bar. He now keeps a stock of real fresh oranges and mixes me a small jug of juice, a touch of vodka to keep it interesting and three of four of them Vitamin C tablets for effect.
Anyways, I’m not feeling enlightened, so don’t have the strength to tell the young fellah, “no”. Don’t play the video slots as much as I usta, but still carry my little strategy cards around with me. Looks kinda professional. Not like me at all, what with me being so frayed round the edges. But even I got a little mortified by the looks I got when I pulled out those pieces of paper, all scruffy and dog-eared. So I draws up another set and Jack here got it laminated for me – he’s real versatile when he’s a mind. It sits in my pocket, and if ever I see a machine with good-looking prospects, I can spend an hour or so getting better acquainted with it. No-one should ever pass up the chance when it comes knocking on your door.
Just one problem for me these days. Video poker strategy isn’t just about accuracy. Speed also is important. You gotta play fast enough to make your money per hour. I’m not fast enough no more. I need my thinking time and the reflexes have slowed. I can’t play enough hands per hour to make it really worth my while.
Some of you probably asking why play video poker at all. Well, it’s kinda second nature to me ’cause I live in one casino or another, so I pass the slots every time on my way to the tables. I create two-way traffic. Folks see me coming to the table, they feel the intimidation factor. Skill with the cards is one thing, but face-to-face is another thing. Guess the ones as knows me don’t want to make the wrong play and look more than a mite foolish so, as soon as they decently can, they’re on their way back to the video poker slots where they feel more comfortable on their ownsome. Fortunately there’s always more than a few newcomers and a few of the old hands as fancy their chances to keep me interested in the real thing.
But sticking with video poker, the most common machines simulate draw poker using one 52-card deck with a virtual shuffle after every hand. First off, you ante up – that’s coins in the slots or your credit balance taking a hit. Five random cards hit the virtual felt. You weigh up how many of the five you’re discarding, and random replacements are dealt from the remaining 47 cards. For those of you as likes hard numbers, there’s 2,598,960 possible hands as can be produced with a 52-card deck.
Now that is the kind of information that intimidates!
Playing video poker online, the virtual shuffle or random number generator (RNG) in the machine simulates the probabilities of drawing any one of the combinations of hands. The House edge comes from adjusting the pay tables in line with the probability set. And ’cause the House always does its sums right, that edge is clearly set and damned hard to beat.
Perhaps, you’ve been thinking that there’s no skill in this game. Well, you’re the one making the decision which cards to keep out of your first five. But that’s where we part company with the real world. In a regular poker game, you’re playing whoever’s sitting round that table. In video poker, all you’re trying to do is get one of the winning card combinations listed in the pay table. The game isn’t to beat anyone else’s hand.
That means there’s a proper mathematical playing strategy for video poker. For any five card deal, what you hold or discard can be calculated to give you the best outcome against the pay table for the machine you’re playing. Change the pay table and your proper playing strategy gotta change too. As the size of that old jackpot changes, your strategy’s changing right alongside.
So, that’s my jug empty and my hangover gone. Time for me to go earn my living. Catch ya ’round. Hey, look. This is me with my nice big smile coming right atcha.
Poker Bluffs

One of the intricacies of poker that is often overlooked is that the best hand dealt does not win, but the best hand in the showdown wins. The objective of poker bluffs is to fool a person with a good hand into folding so that you can win with a moderate hand. However this does not mean that you engage in rampant bluffing. There is a time and place for everything and the same applies to poker bluffs. Poker strategy on bluffs says that you should not bluff in low limit games. The poker stakes are too low in such games to scare your opponents into folding and you will be wasting your bankroll by ending up with mediocre hands in showdowns. Do not bluff against weak players. They do not understand the finer points of poker and tend to enter every poker deal. Poker bluffs are most effective when there are few players left in the fray. If there are too many players someone or the other will call your bluff.
One thing you have to realize about poker bluffs is that you are not the only player who can engage in them. Other players are probably equally adept at poker bluffs. Hence it is important to be able to identify when a poker player is bluffing. There are certain unconditional responses a player makes while playing and it important to be able to read them. For example when a player has a strong hand he may adopt an aggressive posture, or start to sweat or look at his cards frequently. In poker parlance such unconscious acts are known as ‘tells’. If a player does not exhibit his trademark tell then he is not holding a good hand and if he is still in the betting then he is most likely bluffing.
Professional poker players are able to control their tells. However from the cards they display at the poker showdowns you can tell if they are habitual bluffers. Wait till you have a reasonably strong hand and then bait the bluffer. Do not raise bets aggressively but match the bluffer bet for bet. This way you can expect to win a large pot.
Poker Gender Part II : Women… From Mars!

Women seem to be more rationally driven when playing poker than most players of the opposite sex.
According to several sources, rational female poker players not only have to find ways of coping with the persistent sexism portrayed on the felt, but also to develop their unique poker strategy using their most obvious strengths. Some of the stereotypes that label reason-driven women are: the manipulative savvy, the classy-aggressive lady, and the bold aggressive go-getter.
The Manipulative Savvy. According to several sources, this category is where all deceiving appearances fall: the “innocent girl” look, the “bimbo” look and the “average brainless middle-aged housewife” look. Women who can easily be judged by how they carry themselves are actually playing poker before sitting at the table; they are already bluffing about how they will potentially play. They know that by playing a seemingly weak female role, they are provoking the type of reaction from other players that will help them win the game: most of their opponents will not feel threatened by them; instead, they will more than likely try to show off their skills with the kind of confidence that really backfires when they realize the deceiving female savvy is taking all their money.
The bimbo will really use her sexuality to distract and irritate; the innocent girl will attract protection from gentlemen and frustration from girl-haters, and the middle-aged housewife will use her apparent ignorance and random curiosity for poker to her advantage.
Savvy women who fool others with their appearance can really benefit from this first impression, since it is easy to figure out a pattern of responses from sexist males to build a killing strategy at the table.
The Classy-Aggressive Lady. This type of female poker player can knock you off your feet when you least expect it. Far from falling into deceiving looks, she has her unique look and class that makes others respect her, but when it comes down to getting everybody’s money, she is relentless.
However, when luck or skill are not at her side, she keeps her poise and reveals no emotion whatsoever; she even keeps talking pleasantly to her worst opponents, which sometimes makes them apologize for taking her money, to what she usually responds with “that’s OK, I understand.” This woman will never use profanity at the table, and her body language will always be calm and together, regardless of how good or bad her game is going.
The Bold Aggressive Go-Getter. This woman is more predictable in the way she conducts herself, and people can clearly see her strong to-the-point personality; she does not bother to make small talk or use her looks to her advantage: she is there strictly to play poker. No emotions or time for drama. She usually has a serious face and keeps to herself, and calmly tolerates sexism with an indifferent attitude, giving energy only to the game. Of course, when it is time to show what she’s made of, she enjoys her victories with a reserved smile.
The previous personality descriptions sound more rational than emotional, and it seems like women have learned to protect themselves from poker sexism with exactly the opposite of what is expected of them: getting rid of emotional responses at the table.
This has apparently spurred a highly emotional response from their male opponents, to the point of switching labels from the famous book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. Player and author Steve Badger states that “women as a group play poker more successfully than men do because they lose less per capita than men. The mass of women players — most playing tightish, non-hormonal poker — do far better than the mass of men, a great many of whom let ego, machismo and testosterone affect their play dramatically.”
So, as fellow author and player Vince Burgio said, “Why can’t a man be more like a woman?”

Improving your Bluffing Strategy in Poker

Perfecting Your Poker Bluffing Strategy
Every poker player understands the power of bluffing, and just about every poker player has tried his or her hand at it. Few players, however, are really good at bluffing, and the best players know how to use it sparingly but properly. Learning to bluff properly takes some time, and it requires a careful study of the other players in the game.
Learn how you and others play
Those who wish to learn when and how to bluff must first study the behavior of their opponents in the game. Understanding the betting habits of those around you is essential to executing a well-timed and successful bluffing strategy. The first step is to establish yourself as a consistent poker player, as this will demonstrate to the other players that you know what you are doing. Establishing your own table character is an essential first step to a successful bluffing strategy.
After you have established your own table character, and after you have gotten a good read on the behavior and betting strategy of your opponents it is time to execute the first bluff. Perhaps you have found that two of your opponents are quick betters, who will raise their first bets, while two other opponents are more conservative. Perhaps these conservative players will already have folded or called, and this sets up the ideal bluffing situation.
Starting your bluff
It is best to start with a conservative raise to avoid scaring off the other players. If those you have identified as quick betters again raise, you are ready to start betting more aggressively with the hopes of either raising the pot or scaring away the more conservative players.
At this point in the game, the successful bluffer will use the knowledge of the other players in the game to decide to fold or call. Those novice players often branded as maniacs will be too entranced by the size of the pot to back out, and this is exactly the outcome you are aiming for.
The perfect bluffing strategy is often called the semi-bluff. This strategy can be used when you are holding a pair of low value cards that may offer a chance at winning against the maniac in the game by simply waiting for the other players to fold.
Further into the game
Using a well-executed bluffing strategy will help the poker player with strong hands as well as weak ones, since you have now demonstrated your ability to bluff successfully with the other players in the game. In addition, the successful bluffer will be able to get deeper into the game even when holding an average hand, since he or she will be confident in the ability to play well against another bluffer. Becoming a proficient bluffer will also help you with your ability to read the other players in the game, as well as help you spot other bluffers.
Good poker players know that bluffing is not appropriate in every situation, but when used sparingly and well a well-executed bluffing strategy can increase both your enjoyment of the game and the size of your profits.

Learning the Lingo of Poker
March 12, 2010 by bkkpkerplayer
Poker has its own terminology and in order to become a winning poker player in Italy you have to learn the lingo of poker. There are four main terms used in playing poker, which are:
- bluff
- aggressive play
- conservative play
- action, and
- tell.
A bluff is pretending that you have really good cards in your hand and that you feel that you will win the pot, when in fact the cards you have will not win if you have to put them up against those of another player. You place bets that are not warranted by the cards you hold in hopes that other players will fold because thy think you cannot be beat. This is one of the essential strategies of poker, but there is a time and place for it. If you bluff every hand, your opponents will catch on to this and will call you. The key is to use it only once in a while so you can catch the other players off guard and rake in the winnings.
A player who uses aggressive play bets high early in the game so as to take the other players out of their comfort zone when they feel that at the beginning of the game everyone just takes it easy to feel out their opponents. If you adopt this strategy, you place the maximum bet and stay in until the end. It is one way to win a large amount of money early in the game when the other players are not so comfortable calling big bets.
Playing conservatively means placing minimum bets and just going along with the play of the game. It is a good strategy to use if you want to hold onto your money until the players start betting larger amounts, but it also means that when you do win, the pots will not be very large. When your opponents see that you are playing conservatively, they will bail out early once you start placing large bets because they know that you have good cards.
In poker, the action is the amount of betting that takes place at the table. At a table where there is a lot of action, there is a lot of money in the pot and the players are making big bets.
A tell is an action or some expression that you use repeatedly and by which other players can tell whether or not you feel you have a winning hand. Learning to read the other players and get to know their individual tells is a strategy that you do have to learn in order to become a successful Italian poker player. Players who already know their weak spots in this area will take steps to prevent others from seeing them, such as wearing sunglasses to hide their eyes or hats or caps that shade their face. Some players will keep their heads down and not look at the others so that they cannot read his/her face. However, tells can also be in the form of the way you move your hands or the way you move around on your chair.
Freeroll poker tournaments

An entry to win real money for free! Yes, you read that right. A freeroll is a free ticket to earn real cash. How many times in your lifetime do you get an opportunity for an event like this? This happens everyday at online poker sites and a few times a year at local casinos. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:off ice:office” />
Freerolls are a way to get new players involved in poker and to make them like the game. This type of opportunity comes often when you play online and should not be missed if you have the time. A freeroll poker tournament takes long time to finish, but it is free to enter and you can get real money to play poker with.
Finding freerolls is difficult since most sites have some sort of a category for players who can join a freeroll. One site which offers a lot of freerolls for everyone is pokerstars and Bodog poker. These sites offer a lot of freerolls on regular basis and can be played any time of the day. Although you need to make your own deposit for some of the freerolls, there are still lots of free rewards for free.
Since poker has become such a lucrative industry, many poker affiliates offer freeroll tournaments as well. Some sites such as Railbirds offer daily freeroll to their members. This is because they attract new players with these freerolls, so more people join through them, earning them loads of money in commission from which a small percentage goes back to organizing more freeroll tournaments.
It is important to realize that freeroll poker tournaments might not be good practice for the real game because most players in freerolls are donkeys who go all-in randomly without knowing anything about poker. This happens because everyone likes to win real money for free and that attracts a lot of players. On the other hand players who do know how to play poker do not play to the best of their ability because they have nothing to lose and are not putting any of their chips at risk. So you have to adjust to an extremely tight strategy to play the freeroll tournaments in poker.
One of the ways to win a freeroll is to wait and watch. This type of strategy involves taking very few risks, playing only premium hands such as AA, QQ, JJ, TT, and observing all the players on the table. This type of strategy works well in a freeroll since most players like to take risks in freeroll tournaments, you can just sit around and wait for good hands to hit you.
Another type of strategy which works if you get lucky is to go play extremely loose and try to get as many chips as possible. Since most freeroll tournaments only give cash to top finishers; it is important to accumulate as many chips as possible to save yourself during blind levels, to bully and to cash big! This strategy works well of you get a good run of cards. The idea is to bully everyone around; but be careful since most players in freeroll tournaments don’t care about being bullied and will call you with just about anything.
This was your guide to find the freerolls and to win them. It is important to enter freerolls that aren’t a complete waste of time and offer good cash. Make sure you check all the requirements to get in a freeroll, and also have some sort of a calendar with all the upcoming freerolls because there seem to be a lot of them at certain times.
Good luck and see you at the tables!
