There are a variety of sites that you can go and play poker online for fun or for real money. When people speak of online poker they are usually talking about Texas Hold Em’, this is a game whereby you’re dealt two cards at the beginning and through the course of the game five cards are laid down face up on the table. These are communal cards which everyone can use, so if your two starting cards are Ac (ace of clubs) and 9h (nine of hearts) and an ace is dealt face up then you have two aces, if a nine is also dealt you’ll have a pair of aces and a pair of nines.

You can register for an online poker site and go through to their play for fun’ section, the thing to remember when you’re playing for fun is that whilst it’s very good for learning the basics the people you’re playing with will largely be made up of novices and people who aren’t taking it that seriously. Obviously if you can’t win with play money’ then the chances of you winning with real money are slim; however if you’re doing well with play money don’t automatically assume that you’ll be a great real money’ player.

With play money people tend to play a lot more hands; it is much easier to play a 9-2 off suit when the money you’re going to lose isn’t real. If you find that you’re winning a lot on play money tables then move up a level. So for instance if you’ve been winning on the $5 $10 table, move onto the $25 $50 table and if that’s real easy for you move up to the $50 $100 table. The reason for this is that the higher you go the more chance that you’re actually playing good players who feel they need to sharpen up their game, plus it can take a long time amassing a $100,000 play money fortune and even though it’s not real, you still don’t want to lose it playing silly hands. Good advice for the play money tables are, if you’re playing somewhere like poker room or party poker, try and amass a $50,000 play money fortune, before you move onto real stakes and when you do move onto real money, start at the low end of the scale. For instance a $2 buy in and $0.25 $0.50 blinds.

There are two different formats when playing online poker and within these formats two different types. The first is the cash game’, a cash game is held at a table which remains open at all times, this means that anybody may join at anytime during play at that table. Cash game tables tend to have a minimum amount that you have to buy into before being allowed to join, that minimum can be anywhere from $1 to $1000.
