Comparing online poker and traditional poker – Part 8

One of the biggest differences that separate online and traditional poker is the fact that you cant see who you’re playing. While I don’t personally find that the inability to read my opponent affects my game that much, the inability to see your opponent makes some people much more aggressive in their betting. The other, and more unfortunate side effect of online poker is extremely bad table etiquette, and I feel that it cheapens the experience.
As a rule, I do not use the chat functions while playing a game. That is to say, I don’t chat. That is a similarity between my online game and my home game. I prefer to let my chips speak for me. However, there is a growing amount of online poker players that have been influenced by the brattish behavior of Phil Hellmuth, or Mike Matusow, who take it upon themselves to berate the other players at the table for not calling their hands, catching miracle cards, or calling what they feel are uncallable hands and sucking out on them at the river. Then the so called poker expert goes into a rant, more so if this bad turn of events busts them out. I often imagine that the “expert” has just lost their remaining bankroll, and is bitter about it. Additionally, I find it just a bit amusing that the “expert” has totally misread the hand, more often than not. Most often, poker is a game of “outs”, or the number of cards a player could possibly get to make a better hand. For example, if I have caught top pair, or possibly trips, in addition to a flush draw, I am most likely going to call whatever someone bets into me. If the “expert” is holding pocket aces, and is trying to slow play them, only for me to hit a larger hand, the “expert” will have totally missed the number of cards I could have hit to make my hand, preferring instead to rant about the fact that he had aces, and how I was stupid to have called anything he had bet into me.
On some occasions, this ranting takes a nasty and personal turn, and lasts for several hands after the one he or she was burned by. Often I have witnessed the arguments turn into a description of the sexual practices of the winning players mother, for example. It really disturbs me when I see this, because I think of the great players of the game, such as Chris Ferguson, Doyle Brunson, Phil Gordon, and Hoyt Corkins. All of these men are gentleman, and respect the other players at their table by not engaging in this nastiness. When you respect the players in this manner, you are actually respecting the game of poker as a whole, which I’ve always considered to be a game played by gentlemen. Rogues, definitely. Scoundrels, absolutely. But gentlemen always at the table.
I’ve never made any attempt to report any of the behavior to my online poker site of choice, because I support the right of any individual to make a complete idiot out of themselves. I do believe, however, that there are more people like me, who believe that this nastiness has no business at a poker table. I’m not above using it to my advantage, though. Sending them packing from the tourney I’m playing gives the “expert” ample opportunity to go find some other table to abuse. He won’t be continuing his trash at my table, though.
