How to Spot a Poker Tell
February 13, 2010 by bkkpkerplayer
Tells are one of the most important aspects of poker. They are a big part of the game and very important to get clues and hints about the cards that your opponents hold.
A good poker player knows that the amount of money that his opponent bets on has nothing to do with his cards and that in order to evaluate his opponents situation he must spot tells.
A good experienced player can gather lots of information from tells. Tells are signs that reveal information in many different ways, good players know how to spot them and how to use the information that they revealed for their own benefit.
Another important advantage of knowing how to pick up tells is the ability to avoid giving away your own tells. If you know how common players reveal information by tells you can try to look at yourself while playing and to notice what kind of tells you give and by that to learn how to monitor and avoid it.
There are many tells that experienced poker players can read. Tells are very idiosyncratic so in order to know exactly how to read a player’s tell you have to play with the specific player for a long time. In the long run you’ll realize that you’re familiar with your friend’s tells and that you can read them like an open book, but if you’re playing against new opponents in all sorts of poker rooms, here are some of the things that you should look for.
The first thing that you have to look at is the eyes. If you’ll watch professional poker tournaments you’ll notice that many poker pros are playing with sunglasses or visors. This is because the eyes can reveal lots of information about one’s cards.
Take a good look at your opponent’s eyes, learn how he reacts to different situations and you’ll now how to read his tells.
You can also learn a lot from the facial expression on your opponents’ face. You can tell if a player is nervous or eager if he has specific facial expressions or ‘tics’ and you can look for specific smiles or concern if the hands are good or bad.
Look for certain body gestures that can hint on a specific hand. Look for signs of anxiety or distress. There are stimulus responses that even the most experienced players cannot hide, so try to look for those physical changes and to study how the other players respond to different situations.
Try to look for eye pupil dilations, signs of dry throat, sweat, trembling hands and flexing of muscles and changes in the body gestures.
Other things that you have to look for are a repetitive glance at the player’s chips which might indicate a subconscious reaction to different situations at the poker table. Another thing is that you have to look for is the way the players stack their chips. If you notice a different pattern of stacking it might indicate that the player is under pressure or eager to make his move and win the hand.
There are many different tells that can indicate different reactions to situations at the poker table, but you must remember that you cannot count only on tells and you should use other poker strategies if you want to be a better player. Tells can provide valuable information, but serious players know that this is not enough for the game.
Theories behind playing Texas Hold Em poker

Texas Hold’em has exploded in popularity in the last few years following the win of amateur player who made millions in the world series of poker. Texas Hold’em has been around for a long time but only got recognition now for the great game that it is. Just search poker on Google and you will find all sorts of websites offering poker strategy, videos, software, hand trackers, statistic trackers, etc.
Texas Hold’em requires skill, and the best players are always the ones who do no depend on luck and play with odds in their favor. In short run however a donkey (slang term for a bad poker player) can beat the shark (the professional player), due to the luck factor. You must understand that in the short-run there is luck involved, but it will eventually even out after thousands of hands. This is where the Theory of Poker comes into play. The professional players know that losing is part of the game and you are bound to have at least one losing session in your poker career.
Poker is based on a lot of theory and math. First thing to consider when playing poker is whether you have enough money to play with. Sure you might have $20 and take that to a 10c/20c table, but what if you get a bad beat? You must follow proper bankroll management. A general rule is that you must have 20 buy-ins for a cash table. For example, you need $400 to play 10c/20c. The theory behind this is that when you sit on a table, in the short run your opponent might get lucky and take your whole stack. If you only have one buy-in, then you can lose all that money in one unlucky hand and then never be able to play again.
The bankroll management theory states that a poker player more money than a single buy-in to play to the best of his ability. Poker money must be set aside only for poker and not for personal use. This way you can climb up limits and start playing higher stakes. If you lose, you can easily drop down a stake and still have enough money to come back. Bankroll Management must be followed at all times, because it is one of the most fundamental theories, without which you are bound to go broke.
Then comes the pot odds theory. Pot odds refer to the money in the pot and the strength of your hand. This way you can make a mathematically correct decision and make money in the long run. For example, imagine you are button on a $1/$2 game, and you are holding 78s. Everyone calls and according to the pot odds, you can profitably call

The best rules in poker are free. You can be on your way to poker domination with a few simple tips. It would seem that the beginner poker player would have to get as many tips as he can to boost his card table performance. There are several tricks of the trade that a player has to learn and keep up his sleeve. It is important that anyone who wants to start gambling away in the poker card rooms to get to know these free rules for poker to be a poker champion.
Here are a few of these free rules for poker to start with:
1. Do not play every hand. It is easy to be overwhelmed in the game of poker. And, beginners are often overeager in their game wanting to bet on every combination. There is just no guarantee that you will win more by playing more. Play only hands good hands. It pays to play strategically. Read up and learn about how you can stay in the game for more winnings on the tables.
2. Choose your bluffs. Another thing beginners are overeager about is bluffing, or the idea of it. But, seasoned poker players are able to easily spot a bad bluff. There are certain “musts” that should be present in order for a bluff to work. There is a certain amount that you can bluff in a given game. In the free rules for pokers, you have to take into consideration the kind of players you are playing with before you start making your bluffs. Bluffing just because will likely leave you without anything.
3. Keep emotions out of it. When you are gambling, it is never a good thing to be emotional. There are bad decisions that come from being too angry or too cocky or even being too drunk. Playing poker is something that should be played with a clear head. Read your cards, read the table and read your competition. Not having a clear head can impede your ability to make good calls given what you are presented with at the tables.
4. Get out when you have to. In the free rules for poker, there is a need to know when to fold and when to stay in any particular hand. This is how poker should be played. It takes both chance and skill to be able to win in any hand and in the entire game. There is no correlation to the amount of money you have put in the pot and winning. Use your gut feel. There are definitely hands you can fold and then there are hands you can play.
5. Stay tuned to what is going on at the tables. Watch any professional poker games and you will notice that the players are practicing one of the most important tricks in the free rules for poker. It could be difficult to mind your cards and everything else going on in the table. But, there is just really no going around this trick. It is not really a trick rather it is how you play the game. It is all about working your strategy based on the cards you are dealt, the cards on the table, and how the other players are playing their hands.
These are just some of the free rules for poker that you can start using in your games. Playing poker is about making money and having fun. But, it is a thinking game. You do not make money simply by putting money on the tables.
Poker: When you should go all in

When ready to commit your entire chip stack and go all-in? No limit Poker can be very exciting when this play comes into effect, but when should a player go all-in? Since the popularity of poker has risen to extreme heights within the last 5 years all-in strategy has been abused. There are too many rookie players that don’t understand the real game of poker. Thinking that pushing all of their chips in the middle at any given point. They will either steal a pot or get a coin flip heads up and pray its a race ( 50-50 chance at a win). Not a very good strategy to have in no limit poker.
Here are some winning strategies for all-in poker.
While going all in can be a very effective tool at times in no limit poker, it should not be abused. Depending on which poker game you are playing a good time to push all your chips in is if you are involved in a poker hand where you have the nuts (best starting hand). In the first stages of a 2-4 card hand being dealt, and there are several players calling behind you after someone has put a raise in. Usually that raise will be a standard 3 times big blind, or a come in bet depending on the game that you are playing. In a situation where a raise is called in this early stage of the game you either re-raise or push all-in depending on how many chips you have or how large the pot is. This is where pot odds and implied odds enter the game. Usually when a poker player is facing more than two additional callers, even a hand like AA will have a strong chance of losing; therefore try and push the other players out at least leaving you heads up, playing one one one.
The Poker bluff is a one of the most rewarding Allin’s a player may ever have in NL poker. Really not a suggestion for the novice, or the weak conservative player. This Allin really cannot be described with accurate timing as the poker player will have to have achieved near pro status or have a heart of steal to preform. One of the most ultimate skills achieved in any game of poker is the ability to read your opponent. Almost like mind reading really, the ability to read your opponent down to a weaker hand and push Allin with the right timing will get a fold when the opponent could actually have nothing at all. Timing and reading the game can give the ultimate Allin bet!
When times are tough (less than 10 B.B.) is a perfect time to go all-in playing no limit poker. Whendeep in tournament play with a low chip stack, a decent hand, in a relatively good position on the table, with no prior raises. These are desperate times and you really hope at the worst that you will get one big stack to face off in heads play. Hoping he or she has a mediocre hand. This will enable you to double up and hopefully be in a fighting position to get back into your tournament or cash game.
Either way going all-in can make or break a game, use this play efficiently and you may find yourself with a nice profit at the end of a poker session, or reaching that final table in a tournament good luck!
Texas Hold’em Poker Starting Hands

Many first-time Poker players think that when the river card flops down, that’s where you win or lose the hand. But, that’s just no so. No, winning or losing the hand begins with your first two cards.
In fact, many losing poker players could turn around their fortunes just by playing their first two cards better. Poker is full of all sorts of things you need to learn, but learning how to play your starting hand is perhaps the most important. Unless you’re on the blinds, you get a free look at your possibility for the hand.
Your first two cards and the action before you determines if it’s time to jump in or bail out. Over the rest of this article, I’ll present some random hands to help you better understand what types of starting hands are good to play and when. If you’re new to game, there’s one word I want you to learn-tight. Your play should be very tight.
Starting Hand: AA or KK
This is a great hand to get. You’re already a leg up on the other players most of the time. Generally, you want to hit the pot strong. More experienced players will sometimes “bait†opponents into the pot, but new players should always raise or re-raise with this hand.
Starting Hand: AK – Big Slick
Suited or not, this is another good hand to get into the action with. As with the AA or KK, don’t limp into the pot unless you know what you’re doing. Come strong or don’t come at all. Raise or re-raise with this hand.
Starting Hand: Ace and any other non-face.
It never fails. A new poker player sees an Ace is his or her hand and immediately jumps into the hand. Wrong. Just because you have an Ace doesn’t mean your hand is worth a hill of beans-unless you’re playing head-to-head poker.
As with any hand, there are times when any two cards could work. New players should be very cautious with Ace hands. If the other card is low and non-suited, it’s best to dump the hand.
The mistake new poker players make is anteing up to see the flop. Doesn’t seem like much, but this act will cost you a lot of money and in the end, you’ll be a loser for it. The margin between profiting and losing in poker is razor thin. Don’t pay to see flops unless you have a good hand.
Remember, smart play starts from the moment you sit down (virtually or in real life) at the poker table. Use every chip, every move wisely.
Online Poker – Tips and Tricks

It is not uncommon for even experienced poker players to flounder at online poker games. This is because there are some differences in the manner in which poker is played in the real world and online.
1. When you play online poker you are not able to see your opponent and thus you cannot gauge his emotions from facial expressions and gestures. Thus, you need to make use of whatever information is available. The time tells at online poker games offer an indication of whether the person you are playing against is a fresher or an experienced poker player. If the player takes time to make his move, chances are that he is new to online poker and you can probably try to bluff him more than you would otherwise do.
2. Online poker is a fast game, more so than live poker. This means that you have to be at the top of your game. You can consider writing notes to yourself about your game plan and mistakes to avoid and quickly glance at them as you play. If possible, memorize the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents.
3. If you are new to online poker, polish your skills playing with virtual money first and analyze your strengths and weaknesses to gain confidence. This is the time to develop your own strategies and find out whether you are a safe player or an aggressive one who pushes an advantage to the fullest. You can then move on to playing with real money.
4. Ensure that you are registered at a reputed online poker site. This is because there is always a possibility of players colluding online against someone and sharing information. The site you are registered with should have an effective monitoring system for keeping tabs on the players.
5. Your chances of winning depend a great deal on your game selection. Select a game that is in sync with your skills, ability, and style of play. If possible research on your opponents and get an idea of the quality of opponents that you are going to face. Research on online poker games shows that there is a great deal of benefit in accumulating as much information as you can on your opponents. The key mistakes that people make and the ones you should look to avoid are calling too frequently, betting too much, or folding too often.
6. Know the skills that can bring you maximum gains. For example, if you play with a group that plays very few hands and folds more often, you can benefit by sharpening your short-handed play skills. You should also be a little more aggressive in blind-stealing.
7. Conversely, if you are playing with the “maniacs” who bet aggressively do not be afraid to hold on to your cards because they are betting “maniacally” and not because they have good hands. If you feel that your online poker opponents are calling too often, take advantage of it and do not bluff.
Remember that at an online poker game, if you are unable to form an intelligent opinion of your opponents, you will get sorted out by them.

How to choose an online poker room.
Choice of the poker room for the poker game is very significant. It is prudent to pay attention to the following factors: convenience of depositing and withdrawal options, availability of the required games and consequently – total amount of players, level of opponents, software, support, bonuses, etc…
If you intend to use only credit for depositing and withdrawal funds and bank transfer, then it will immediately limit the list of the available poker rooms. If you can use several methods of depositing and withdrawal funds, for example, you have an account with e-wallets such as moneybookers or neteller then this issue will not restrict your choice.
The next question is: what poker game and at what limits are going to play? Texas hold’em limit and no limit, also single and multi-table hold’em tournaments are popular at any online room, but those who prefer Omaha poker, and stud poker have to choose the most attended rooms (Party, Stars, Full Tilt) to find the opponents. The same refers to those who love high stakes, not all online poker rooms even in holdem have players who stake $50/$100 or higher.
Most poker players want to win money, so they look for weaker poker opponents. Lately the trend of leveling the poker opponents in different poker rooms is becoming more and more obvious, nonetheless Party and casino poker rooms are considered to have less professional poker players (Prima networks, Boss Media, Playtech, Pacific Poker).
Poker player may have specific requirements to the poker room software, for example, non-downloaded software is offered by poker rooms of Ongame, ?2?, Prima and Party Poker. Many poker rooms allow to reduce the size of tables, and the computer screen without overlay holds four table with the resolution 1024?768. For somebody the facility of Poker Tracker can be a criteria. One can buy Tracker and use it, other poker players prefer poker rooms that are not allowed the Poker Tracker.
In general, it is not about WHERE you play but HOW you play. So, choose the poker room with sufficient number of opponents at your selected limit, convenient depositing and withdrawal funds options, maybe good bonus and go ahead!
The game.
After registration, log-in and enter the lobby of the online poker room. Here, as a rule, a poker player will find out the number of players, latest news, choose options, enter the cash desk to make deposit. But the main thing is the choice of the poker games. A poker player may choose the necessary game (holdem, Omaha, stud, etc.), its type (limit, unlimited, pot-limit), cash or tournaments (sit&go or multi table), limits. The number of poker players and anticipants is shown for each poker table and also average jackpot, number of poker players at the flop and number of hands per hour. The poker player can view information about all the players of the selected poker table in anew window. The player may join the vacant table, or wait list (the player can wait for the first vacated table at the particular limit or particular table).
To make the first deposit, enter the cash desk and deposit the required sum, choosing the payment method.
When the table opens, the poker player may take any vacant seat. Appearance of the players and the table differ from one poker room to another, but the principle is the same everywhere – oval table with seats around it. Chat option is usually at the bottom of the poker room site, as well as options and buttons for decision-making. While it is no your turn to lead, you may use the buttons of preliminary choice of action. Tick one of the proposed flags and when it is your turn, it will be done automatically. If you have not performed preliminary choice, then you have to select one of three buttons: Fold, Call, Raise. You can use mouse to operate, but some poker rooms allow to play with keyboard using “hot buttons”. You pocket cards are displayed next to your name, general cards are put in the centre of the table. The poker player usually can view the statistics of his game, communicate with other players in the chat, make notes about other poker players which will be available at every poker game with this opponent.
Enjoy experience with online poker.

Let’s start with differences of online poker from off line poker game and the pros and cons of the online poker version. The main principal difference is obvious – poker players, the opponents cannot see each other. Hence, on one hand online poker player does not have to maintain his “poker image” and on the other hand the poker player cannot “read” the opponent hand by focusing on the Body Language. So, in online poker room the psychological moment of the game is rather weak, for somebody it is good and for someone it is not so good. In other respects online poker presents only advantages and it will take a long time to name all of them. Here are the main ones.
Any online poker room the same as any online casinos work 24 hours a day 365 days a year and any poker player may play all around the clock hole year.
Online poker room player does not have to tog up and go somewhere. Playing poker online at the computer is more comfortable that at the casino table.
Online poker room player can choose from a wide variety of games including the rarest ones. Online poker room player may play during a fifteen minute break; or leave the table any time. Poker player may participate in a number of tournaments and cash-games. Online poker room player can play short handed tables or face-to-face. Online poker room player may play at several online poker room tables at a time, play many games in an hour with simultaneous shuffling and dealing. Time limit for decision taking makes the game more dynamic. Online poker room player does not have to control and count the jackpot and his own chips.
Playing poker in online poker room is a good practice for the beginners playing micro limits which cannot be found in off line casino.
Before playing the game.
If you are ready to play poker in an online poker room, you should install online poker room client programs. Basically the poker software comprises two parts – server part – here the cards are generated and information about all the players is collected. Client’s part – here the player sees the cards, opponents and makes poker decisions. Both parts of the software are connected via the Internet and constantly exchange information.
Client programs.
Online poker room client programs can be of two types: downloaded (executable programs ) and non-downloaded ( flash or java, played in the browser ). Non-downloaded programs are less convenient though their number is increasing. To play non-downloaded poker room version a poker player should, as a rule, press some button like “Instant Play”, then a small browser window will be opened and the poker room software will be downloaded there. If this is java poker room program, the player should have java scripts enabled in his browser, flash plug-in should be installed to view flash. The poker players are likely to have Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher with 128-byte encryption.
If you prefer downloaded version ( and it is more convenient and functional), please find the section “Download” at the poker room site and download the program (usually 4-8 Mb, though sometimes occur small ones less than 1MB; they download the software after the launch and then will install the client). When the download is complete, start the program and it will install the poker client. As a rule the client will automatically add the icon of poker room at your desktop or to folder “Programs”.
Rules for the registration at online poker rooms, money depositing and withdrawal of the winning money are the same as in online casinos. When registering, fill out the application, indicate your full name, address, phone number, email, select login and password, and also your screen name that will be used during the poker room playing sessions. Almost all online poker rooms accept cards. There are a few e-wallets such as Moneybookes, Neteller, Firepay and so on to ease online poker room players funding options.

Online Poker Strategies: All the Way to Victory

Online poker strategies are crucial in order to succeed at online poker, although succeed means different things to different people. For some, success at online poker means winning the big jackpots all the time and for others, success at online poker simply means winning more than losing and this second objective is far more reasonable and achievable. Online poker strategies will require you to develop an appreciation for and understanding about the odds that concern various games and card hands, as well as the chances of success/failure.
All online poker strategies will require the player to be consistent, all too often a winning streak is jeopardized or a losing streak compounded by the greed and or stubborn nature of the overly emotive poker player. All too often online poker strategies are derailed as a result of the player’s inability to concede defeat, or know their limits. What this means in the long term is that they end up losing more and more money as they continue playing, and this begins the vicious cycle of chasing debts with more money, and as they lose their focus they make more and more errors which in turn equates to losing more money.
Knowing when to quit and cut your losses when you are in the mid of the losing streak is imperative, because you are simply not thinking straight. Online poker strategies differ from ordinary poker strategies in that there is a greater emphasis on the player being able to temper his feelings and control his emotions so he does not make mistakes.
The danger with online poker is that you are in your comfort zone, in your own home, and so the temptation to play for longer periods of time is quite strong. Online poker strategies sometimes actually advocate that you do not eat or drink whilst playing online poker, the rationale behind this is that you do not get too comfortable, and settled in. Whilst by all means enjoy yourself, make sure that you are able to make that crucial disconnection (both literally and mentally) when the time comes.
Online poker strategies require one crucial thing, commitment to the rules. You do not need to be a master card shark in order to become proficient at online poker, you just need to be committed to your strategy, willing to learn and above all else diligent.
Make sure to pace your bank roll, nothing will kill off your online poker strategies as quickly as losing your entire bank roll in your first game. Online poker strategies that pay off well usually involve the players playing at several tables at once, and studies have shown that the best number of tables (and by extension the absolute maximum) number of tables to play at is 4. Also, make sure to rotate around different tables as this will also help improve your odds of a win and different sites will allow you to take advantage of the benefits on offers.
